Stoking the genes

Babycakes is the first of her generation for both my husband and my families. She's got five grandparents (my father is remarried) and two aunts for whom she is the FIRST.

Although I do not doubt their love for her is real, it seems also to be biologically determined. She is the only representative of their genes (thus far) for the future and so she is the only possible way for them to be genetically successful. This particular amalgamation of genetic code is quite valuable to them. No wonder they all claim that her poo smells sweet.

This holiday season, all of the Baby Jesus images are appealing to me in a completely narcissistic way. ("That's Mary, who is gazing down adoringly at her baby JUST LIKE I DO, and her baby Jesus, who is almost as cute as my daughter.") And the influx of visiting relatives we're due to receive this Christmas is our own Adoration of the Magi.

Gold, frankencense and myrrh is likely only if it's available at Nordstrom, however, and I know in my cold little heart that everyone's just using her as a genetic courier to the future.
