Austin letdown (not milk)

Hub-D and I placed Chebbles in our friends' daycare today (where she had a rip-roarin' time and now has a lot of questions as to WHY she's not enrolled in daycare at home...) and we drove with a nice real estate agent all over Austin.

And we really couldn't find anything we liked. Even the nicest homes in Austin have no yard. People just don't have yards. And the few houses with yards are too far outside of town to consider. There is just nothing that combines class, comfort and ample living space for our growing (hopefully) family.

When we looked for homes in Tennessee, we had several that we loved, and two that we truly felt "at home" in. And here? Nothing fits us. We started reminiscing about Tennessee. Hub-D threw in a Hail Mary suggestion about Dallas. I found him sitting in a darkened corner of our friends' house here asking again about the idea of Pittsburgh.

So it looks like Austin is a no-go.

I'm sorry for the disappointment. Not very sorry, because I'm selfish like that. But I am sorry for the disappointment. NO yards? Is it all too urban? Is that why? That's so odd.

I'm sorry, too. Austin is a great city.

I'm sorry you didn't find something you liked. I'm not surprised about the yards, though. With 100 degree weather and high humidity from April through November--everybody is inside in the AC! They only come out in the evening to watch those bats come out from under the bridge.

From my location here in the "New Hamper", it's promising to hear you re-considering some options back East.

Well, I am a Texan, so my opinion is totally biased. Texas is a great place only if you can tolerate heat. I grew up here and still complain about the heat! Austin is about as "California" as you can be as far as Texas cities.

I often fantasize with dh about places to live too. But our families are here, so Montana would be difficult. I wish I were so rich I could live beautifully in San Francisco or New York, but oh, well. I will just live vicariously through House Hunters on HGTV (Portland/ Seattle look neat.)

Our good friends live in Dallas and every time we visit them, I fall in love with it all over again. And they have yards, and Hub-D can rest assured it's definitely Bush country.

And while I could never see myself moving back to Pittsburgh, I have come to terms with the fact that it really is a good place to raise kids. God, did I really just say that??
