Nope, no one's sleeping

For those of you still keeping score:

Baby V is still waking up about eight times a night. There is nothing, but nothing, that will cure this ongoing restlessness.

I'm told it's a sign of giftedness. Really brainy kids tend not to sleep, and look to acquire more data for their growing crania 24 hours a day.

So that's what I tell myself, after I've thrown back the covers and hollered profanities...

It's a sign of giftedness.
It's a sign of giftedness.
It's a sign of giftedness.
It's a sign of giftedness.
It's a sign of giftedness.

Sigh.

My mr-mini-smartypants only gets a good night's sleep on Benadryl. He actually requested some last night because he wanted to go to bed "early" (before midnight). Completely uninterested in enabling a future pill addiction, I denied the request.

I really feel for you since, as I left in a previous comment, he didn't start sleeping through the night until he was three years old. I'm surprised either of us survived for me to tell the story.

(My longest comment ever? Sorry...)

Ugh ugh ugh. I'm sure she'll be brilliant. But ugh.

I can offer my child as evidence in support of that theory. :)

It is exhausting, though.

Z was a terrible sleper. Which means two things: one, I support the theory that not sleeping well in infancy is a sign of giftedness and two, since I have experience in the matter I am happy to take a turn overnight at your house sometime soon.
Another mantra to keep in the cycle as you are lying awake at night: this too shall pass. Life is long and even if this lasts a year (!) it is the blink of an eye over the course of your lifetime.

I've heard the same thing, and while I'm not sure my boys can board the gifted train, I was labeled gifted as a child, my ex is rumored to have been an intelligent kid despite his growing into a supreme idiot, and they have excelled in learning in daycare/preschool, so maybe they're wakeful first few years, refusals to nap regularly, and just general alertness will prove to support that theory.

I wish you luck and patience and SLEEP! all the same;>

Thanks dudes. I'm glad to know I'm not alone... I keep saying, "But all my FRIEND'S babies are sleeping through the niiiiight," but it sounds like you all went through the trenches too. What we wouldn't do for our brilliant children...

Sounds JUST like E. I am a firm believer in it being a sign of giftedness. It was the only positive thing I could come up with in those days, waking up every hour and trying to nurse her back to sleep. E turned around after some sleep training (and being able to roll onto her stomach really helped too) a little after 4 mos old. We had to retrain a few times and often had tough awakenings between 4am-6am, but otherwise she was good to go. There's hope, my dear. My heart aches for you, the time is still SO fresh in my mind (no amnesia yet), possibly why we don't have another one yet :)

I just heard that from my neighbor when I grumbled that I have not slept through the night in YEARS. YEARS!!!! He better remember me when he wins that Nobel fucking prize....
